Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS)

First developed in the 1930s, Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS) has evolved into the most precise and methodical approach to skin cancer treatment. MMS involves the layer-by-layer removal of cancer-containing tissue. Each layer is meticulously examined under a microscope for evidence of remaining cancer cells. If cancer cells are detected, a subsequent layer of skin tissue is removed. The process is repeated until the physician is confident that all cancer cells have been removed. If necessary, plastic surgical techniques are used to repair the treated area. Only local anesthetic is required, so you remain awake or lightly sedated during the procedure. And post-operative side effects (such as altered skin sensation over the surgical area or increased redness on the site) are, in most cases, minimal and temporary.
